Valve clearance on 400 ssn

Hi lads,
I m about to do the valve clearance on my kat.
And I wondering as the exhaust is not the original one, is the original exhaust valve clearance
still right ?
I m a bit scared to do this as I never done it before

It is a bit of a mess, I had to remove, radiator, coolant, and I finally got the cover out.

I just went to the manufactor to get a feeler gauge, and some coolant to refill after.

What a mess, I wish I would not have started this...

Arnaud, stick to manufacturers clearances.

No, you DON'T need the tappet adjuster tool just a spanner and a pair of pliers or your fingers, then re-check after you tighten the nut.

Yeah, I went through the trouble to get the all thing out for not result as I don't have the tool.
So I put everything back in now.

Obviously forgot to measure the little square. So does someone know if it is 3 or 4 mn ?

I have check the valve clearance and it seems to be off. I am not 100% sure of the cam position to do the work.
Based on what I saw on the manual the cam as to be in up position, I also saw that there is a notch at this end of the camshaft so I suppose that if one cam is in up position then the notch as to be a either parallel to the head cover of 90 degree of it.

Do you see what I mean?

I tried with a plier in there put there is very little room, so I thought as I need the bike to go to work tomorow, I better leave it as it is before something goes work.

As I am going to change the exhaust pretty soon, the radiator will have to go off anyway and I will need to re-sync.
So I will do everything in one go then.


It is a lot better with the new carbs, I think my cold start issue will be fix.

the suzuki tool is only like 3-4£ .... as i recall.

I will ring up suzuki then, I see if they have it. I need other bits and piece anyway so i ll kill 2 bird with one stone then.

I need help regarding the valve clearance and the notch on the side. It is really not explain properly in the manual.

I got the little tool order and the little reset trip, the little tool is about €13 so about £9.

Well here there is a heavy VAT too... I hate the price of Ireland more and more.
