Speedo Calibration

Don't know if there's an easy fix for this, but my Kat 1100 is fitted with a GSXR1100 17" front wheel, but still using the original speedo, so at 30mph the speedos reading over 40mph, is there anything that can be done to make the speedo read correctly? Cheers Niall

can you modify the speedo drive from another bike to fit your wheel? for istance the 16 inch wheel kat sd and the 19 inch wheel kat sz have the same speedo, but there wheels are different sizes, so the difference must be in the drive box on the front wheel. how about getting the drive from a 250 or 400 kat with smaller wheels and seeing if it can alter the ratio driving your speedo.

Thanks for the reply. As far as I can tell, by going on pics on e-bay the speedo drive fitted is the Gsxr one, I did wonder if the drive screwed to the back of the speedo, where the cable screws in could be different, but I dint really want to buy a set of GSXR clocks to see if that could be swapped over, to find out it cant or makes no difference.

That sounds a bit odd.

When I swapped my standard front wheel for a GSXR 17" wheel the speedo was still accurate.

Are you sure that your clocks are calibrated?

As Poochy says, changing to a 17" front wheel doesn't make a lot of difference normally.

As a thought (throwing this out to the masses) is there a difference between 750 and 1100 MPH clocks?? ie, don't 11's go to 160mph and 750's 140?? That would make a difference surely??
I could answer this question myself by going into the cave but it's muddy up there and I'm a southern softy

2" Inches is a lot x 3.142 PI....thats 6" every wheel rotation difference..........and we all know 6" is a lot.

Or maybe the gearbox in the speedo drive is different for the bikes with 16" wheels to compensate.

if i could be arsed, id go back to the parts fiche and see if the sz and sd speedo drive had a different part number!

I believe (not entirely certain though) that the gearing for the speedo drive on the GSXRs is different to the standard Kat ones.
Which fortunately gives the same number of speedo cable shaft rotations for the distance that the wheel travels.

I could be wrong.
