It looks like I can look forward to another carb strip down then! I thought I had checked them all out throughly and cleaned (before repainting). It's only No 1 cylinder so hopefully I can just take the bowl off to check first off.
Thanks for feedback on the Dyna S - I'll save my money, so it's just a 4-1 for now (plus what I saved I can get some nice new braided brake lines).

You'll need to have the carbs off to rejet them for the 4-1 pipe, do the two jobs at once

Yep I had the same starting problem after cleaning my carbs, so removed them again, cleaned the float bowl passages, started and ran fine after that.
