gsx1100 katana oil cooler ?

The main cooling on the Katana comes from air flowing over the alloy. The sump etc should also cool a little. This will cool the oil a little. So its air oil cooled. Where as the gixer motors are oil air cooled. They have a oil cooler where a radiator would normally be. The rad cools the oil then returns to the motor. However it still has a certain amount of air cooling. Id say the kat is 90% air cooling and 10% oil. Only because of the air flow over the sump. Whereas the gixer imho is maybe 50\50 oil and air

Phil you are not missing an oil cooler there wasn't' one fitted at the factory.
One can be fitted if you want to but It wasn't standard. For the reasons FBJ stated

the gsxr1100m shares the same engine basically as the gsx1100f katana, known as the teapot, suzuki used the katana name on the gsxr engined gsxf models, and i thin this is where the 'air and oil cooled' mistake has been made by the writers of such tech articles. the 16 valve katana engine has more in common wih the old 8v gs1000 than with the gsxr.
as fossie has said, you can fit an oil cooler, there are 2 ways to do it, firstly using the oil pressure switch takeoff by utilising a secial adaptor, or more commonly by using the 2 large blots either side of the oil cooler takeoff. having said all that, its not by any means necessary to se one on a kat unless you live somewhere very very hot or run lots of high speed miles, or lots and lots of inner city stop start town work.

If u fit one using the two bolts either side of the filter use a efe filter cover

if you buy a cooler kit for the oil takeoff it usually comes with an ally plug to blank the oilway off behind the cover.
