Rejetting

Post by empler » Wed Feb 23, 2011 9:25 pm

Hi, I'm thinking of getting pod-filters for my GS 550 Katana. It just seems more convenient and looks and sound a bit better. I'm wondering what kind of jets i need to get. It has the stock exhaust system and i don't plan on changing it. Or is it a bad idea to get pod-filters since the GS 550 have vacuum carbs? Thoughts and helps much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My own view would be not to bother as vacuum carbs can be really difficult to set up with pods. You need air correctors installed and for not much gain it's a lot of work. If you were tuning then yes but for an otherwise standard set-up then no.

If you do go forward with it then look for a Dynojet kit and be prepared for a shock at the price too!!! It's a lot more than a few years worth of OE air filters!!!

And pod filters are cr'p in the wet...........and if you're still running the restrictive standard zorst........why bother!

And where do you put the breather from the cam cover?

Spend the money on a set of new airbox to carb boots if you are struggling to get your carbs back in without cursing and swearing !

Well I think the point is that tinkereing on the carbs is much easier with single pods. But as stated above, I'd go for some new and nicely flexible carb manifolds for both sides, if I were you.

I've a mate who put pods on gs550 and rejetted he reckons it ran like a pig low down and soon swapped back to the airbox with hiflo filter, says the jets made little difference with either filters. Agreed the airbox is a pain when doing anything as i'm sure the damned things were made for a different bike and not the one they fitted it to !
Ill be putting an airbox in the 550 Kat i'm building up now, even though I think the pods look better. Cant affford to have a little four pot coughing and spluttering.
