hi all, ive got a pop up model and im having problems with charging dont think its putting out quite enough (13v) and when i had a look at the reg rec a couple of the yellow wires were melted together. it looks like its an old superdream one with 6 wires but having looked at the manual i have it looks like it should only have 5, do i need to disconnect one or join up? will check the earths tomorrow but dont know what else i could check?

honda ones have 6 Suzuki have 5 . all yellows are to alternator. Suoperdream are GREEN earth black and red just join them together and attach to red live of reg rec loom.

2 melted yellows is your issue however they must have touched and most probably shorted a winding in the alternator.

cheers fossie, i thought that was the case with the number of wires, will get the multimeter out and check the alenator windings first, im not sure if the wires touched or if i got it in time and just the plastic covers had melted together.

been back out and checked the altenator which seems ok, so decided to replace the connections on the wires on the reg/rec and try it, soldered the three yellow wires to the three from the altenator that was straightforward enough. i then i turned my attention to the other three wires from the reg/rec, it must be a superdream one as it has a green a black and a red. when i started these were connected to three wires coming from the (modified i think) loom. the green was connected to a black wire which i took to be right and that this was earth,so i reconnected this.

The black had been connected to a red wire which becomes live with the ignition on, and the red wire had been connected to a red/white wire which is constantly live.

Now with advice from fossie earlier i joined the red and black wires coming from the reg/rec but then which red wire from the loom to connect to? i thought that surely it would be the one which was only live when the ignition was on so connected it up and tried it, nothing at all, across the battery was only reading 12.5v.

So i tried connecting to the other red which is contantly live and 14.5v across the battery, this has me puzzled though as i thought it should be wired up so as to be live only with the ignition on?

Any advice/piss taking/abuse which helps me sort it out will be greatly appreciated!

cheers

I thought the red went straight to the battery :( and the black went to orange(switched live) ?

The black wire is just a current sensor that is all , it can be joined to a switch live, which it must have been. It is just easier with the 2 together as less connections . Basically you have wired it up correctly if you have 14.5 volts. just make sure that you rev the engine to 6000 rpm and don't have anything over 15volts max.

hi guys thanks for the replies, i have wired it up with the red to the red/white which is constant live and the black to the red which is live with ignition on and i am getting 14.5 across the battery at 6000revs so all looks good,

the reg/rec is getting hot though, i know that they do which is why they have cooling fins but it does seem warm, i guess i will need to just keep an eye on it.

cheers

would it be better/ok to do, if i just connected the green earth wire directly to the battery? when i checked the earth wire from the loom it seemed ok but if i do away with it and go direct i would know it was good.
