You could take a 17" rim of a 1100 Kat which gives you a 130 section tyre.

plenty of 1100 wheels kicking round, also gs1000 back wheel is the same (not the earlier one with 18 inch rear. the 1100 wheel will allow you much better and you might find much cheaper rear tyre choice as there are many more 17 inch choices than 18 inch.

.....but it changes the gearing.... maybe do a 520 or a 530 chain conversion at the same time and take the difference in wheel diameter into account

cobblers! the difference between a 17 inch wheel with a tyre on it and an 18 inch is pretty small, you will probably not even notice the difference. dont bother changine the chain and sprocket kit till the one you have is kaput, why throw money away.

It depend on the width of the rim. post up the width of both wheels 18 and 17" and i'll look into sizes.
You can't go too big with a narrow rim as the tyre will just curl as it's designed to go on a bigger rim, usually you can only go up 1 size on a given rim, any more and you need a wider wheel.

Like Arnica says going to big results in incorrect tyre profile, thus infact giving a smaller contact patch and increased wear.
