Well a few things to do (I'd forgotten about the heating up of the plugs on the cooker - that takes me back some) No reed valves - they were on the X7. The oil looked more like engine oil, rather than 2-stroke oil. The X5 has a starter motor and all the starter gears are in that part too, which is why I thought the oil being present might be correct, but which I haven't managed to 100% confirm yet. But it certainly is starting to look like a seal problem. So engine out and fix or Ebay it with the usual "has stood some time and needs the carbs cleaned!". I'll probably (try to) fix just for the fun of it :-)

Only got the X5 as they still seem to be reasonable prices - RDs are just silly money now and generally are like this bike being passed around with issues!

I'll keep you posted on how I do.

Cheers

surely if the crank seals were mullered it would suck out from the genny not blow in? iirc some suzuki 2 strokes of the era had their end crank bearings lubed by gearbox oil and the centre and big ends lubed by the oil that the motor burns. id check the reeds before i dropped the motor, especially if you are taking the carbs off anyway! have you access to an ultrasonic bath to clean the carbs?
i had an x5, it was utterly wonderful, bcb114v where are you now! we used it for commuting to work and general running round. we did over 100 miles a day, 2 up for 18 months, all on a little 200cc two stroke, and it never ever missed a beat.

JohnR's comments made me want to try and fix and keep it! Cheers :-)

Anyway, after cleaning carbs again and also testing the Coil, CDI, Rectifier and Exciter Coil and cleaned contacts it runs! It runs badly, but it runs! Took out for a spin and not revving to top end (probbaly about 7k) and only got 50mph out of it, but now it's running it makes it a little easier to try and see what is causing that. I still think it possbly has an air leak somewhere, so a top end strip is next.

Actually not quite next, as the kick start bolt sheared off so the kick starter is stuck on now - might post a picture and see what you mechanical wizzes think the the best action is to get it out, but I will have a try first as I have an idea...

If you have a left hand drill bit try drilling it out, or get some easy outs and try them

Just an update of a dead posting!
Thanks for all advice - it was the middle oil seal in the end, so needed a full crank rebuild and pistons and rebore. All back together and running fine now and just passed it's first MOT in 20 years. Been fun doing but missed the nice weather now.

On this bike there was meant to be oil in the generator side...

...right I'm off up the chippy now - Ying Ning Ning Ning Ning :-)

And if that crank seal is fooked the centre crank seal will prob be fooked too.

Those Iridium plugs are Crap. IMO!

Fit the bog standard B8ES plugs that have been heated up on the gas ring.

Great bikes though!

I Love the sound of the Suzuki X5 with spannies fitted!

I was right! where's the gloat smilie?
