650 v 550 Oil Cooler

Post by G0FHM » Wed Jul 31, 2013 5:43 pm

Dear Deirdre,

I've just had an oil cooler arrive, for a 550 - but was told by the breaker that "They are the same as the 650"....

Err, no they aren't!

The 650 has 5 rows, the 550 has 4!

I can make it fit ok.

I'm just worried about the loss of a row and the effect on cooling. I know we are not in California or Australia - and the Jap market bikes didn't have them (and their climate is similar to ours, but they had more rigid speed restrictions) etc etc. It isn't going to get thrashed (taking into account it's age).

It's a case of having to make do with what we can get at the moment, as I haven't seen a half decent 650 oil cooler & pipes for sale (within budget) and ours is totally beyond redemption. And the 500 unit is a minter.

Should I be worried?

Yours,

Concerned of Norfolk :-)

No mate, it'll be fine. As you say, the other 650 doesn't have a cooler and you don't hear of them going bang, so don't worry.

I ran for years with a GSX 550 oil cooler, which is what you must have because the GS didn't have one.

Fossie,

Yep, it's GSX550.

Good news then, i'll get it fitted tomorrow. Should be able to get her spun up then!

Thanks for the reassurance!
