GS 650 GZ Katana Speedometer

Hi,
I am in need of a new speedometer after a minor prang (see photo). Someone decided to knock over my parked motorcycle while parking their car. Apparently it's a discontinued item so will have to settle for secondhand. The rest of the instrument cluster seems to work ok and wasn't damaged apart from a small crack in the plastic by the ignition switch which I can live with.
Is the speedometer detachable from the rest of the instrument cluster? If so presumably it can be bought separately on eg Ebay etc.
Also, will the speedometers from any other models fit the 650 GZ katana?
eg the GS 550 or GS 550 Katana etc
Just trying to increase my chances of locating one.
Thanks in advance for any advice or info on the best way to make good the damage.

PS I should add the original speedometer is in Km/hour. Not sure if this will cause any incompatibility problems with eg UK ones which are in Mph.

sorry to hear that...

yes, you can remove the speedo on it's own to replace it. mph should swap out without an issue if thats what you find... not sure you'll get just a speedo on it's own though... may be the entire cluster - if the third party is paying then i'd go the entire cluster route... with new plastic centre bit too... and get replacement parts for any scuffed rubbers etc... they may be discontinued but may well also be available on a shelf gathering dust somewhere?

Its a KMH clock ..............Id look on Ebay Germany or Ebay France.

The clocks are from a jap import GZ machine however if you rlace the speedo with a mph on he it will read fine don't worry.
As Sparki says the speedo is detachable and only held onto the bracket with 2 x 8mm nuts.

A 550 katana one is the same but the rev counter red lines 500 rpm later.

Complete sets come up on eBay , mostly GX model , (no petrol gauge)from time to time , infact last night a set for £26 was on

I may have a set spare , (GX)I know I have spares but not how many. Can't get to them till the weekend after this one though.

I dont know Craik so I dont know what country he lives in.............If it is the UK then a MPH speedo would be ideal.

Thanks all. Am in the UK, so a speedometer in Mph would actually be preferable.
While we're on the subject of speedos, I was thinking about resetting the mileage on the replacement speedo to match the mileage on the old one. Can they be taken apart to do this?
How easy is it to do this, or is it more trouble than it's worth?

Lot of trouble if the milege is a long way out.

You can use an electric drill and an old speedo cable end to wind the milege up or down, but it cantake a lot of time....................Or take clocks apart"

Or just keep a note of milege / km of when u changed the speedo.

Funnily enough I need to take apart the speedo from my GT200X5 which is a similar construction to the GS650 / GS550 clocks, though I'd prefer not to do it the same way as Craik Has anyone tried to do this with the GS clocks? You have to prize the metal rim off but this seems pretty difficult to do so wondered if anyone had a technique.

The metal rim peels off very easily, use a spoon or blunt item gently. However to reset the mileage you will have to get the needle off, which will be fragile,a couple of screws under side and it all comes apart.

Best just use a drill , reverse takes less time usually..

Or don't bother, the relevance of the odometer reading after 30 odd years is academic .
