Re: pop up forks
Oops sorry simon got to disagree there, to put the 259ml in and get the correct amount you'd have to completely drain the fork of oil, the only way to do that is to strip it to get every last bit of oil out or you'll end up with more oil than you think. By doing it the airgap way you guarantee you have the correct amount and that both legs are even. It might take a little longer but it's worth it to get it right
edit (as you might have been saying this anyway Simon)
In saying that of course put the 259ml in then measure the airgap it'll get you in the right ball park rather than guessing, i have a fork oil adjustment tool that makes the job relly easy, but if not you can do it with a tape measure, when your close just add a little bit at a time to get it up to level...

Re: pop up forks
thats a valid point mal,
i was thinking that the forks were to be stripped,
when doing the air gap, i have a tube with a locking plate attached to a syringe,i set the tube to the correct depth then draw the excess fluid off.

Re: pop up forks
lets make sure I have this right, I take out the springs, compress the forks and fill them with oil till I measure 213mm from the top of the leg to the oil?

Re: pop up forks
Once you've got a fair amount of oil in pump the fork up and down a few times so the oil gets everywhere it should, then fully compress it and measure..

Re: pop up forks
right guys, I took the forks off and measured my air gap, it around 300mm, which is odd, I then drained out the oil and using the earlier advice, put a marker on a measuring tape and re-filled them to the correct air gap, feels a lot more solid now. Hopefully have it out in a week or so and see if its better on the road.
ps used 15 weight oil this time
