Wheel Paint

Post by Andyuk » Thu Jan 15, 2015 3:43 pm

Hi,
Just joined the forum having gazed at the internet for many hours trying to find out some bits and impressed with the activity and experience on this site over others.
I haven't got a Kat (yet) but am restoring the ugly sister - a GSX1100EZ - not sure if that means instant expulsion from the forum!!
One thing I'm really struggling with is finding the best way to refinish the cast wheels which are the old Suzuki dark grey (I think the code was 12U) but endless searching has drawn a complete blank so far.
Does anyone have any ideas by chance??
Cheers in advance
Andy

Thanks Mick,
Good to know I'm welcome - the EZ came along out of the blue as a really original bike sat in a dusty garage since the late 1980's so I couldn't resist it.
Been fully stripped and now starting the rebuild so lots of shiny bits to play with but a long way to go still.
I'll try and put a before and present picture up if I can figure out how!
I think you're right on the paint code as I've drawn a blank so far finding anything. Trying to get bike back to original so black isn't an option on this one.
Hopefully someone will have a good match / idea.
Cheers,
Andy

Strangely I have was wondering the same thing myself recently but with a GT200 X5 but the same style wheels (my Katana is the SD with later ones). I'm thinking polish then mask the rims and sides of the star then spray probably satin black + satin clear coat. Ok it's not standard I guess but will hopefully look more or less correct.

I did this (polish/mask/spray) on my GS1000 wheels many years ago. Even now I shudder to think how long it took. Looks great but veeerrry labour intensive. Long time, very long time.
The quick expensive way to match the colour is to get the paint from RS Bike Paint. I think they have the Suzuki paint codes.
Or look in Halfords for the nearest car colour...

Mmm, maybe I'll go the powder coating route then! For me it's only a X5 and I have one that's standard already. I was wondering whether to try some sort of Heron suzuki retro paint scheme anyway...

Cheers guys,
RS haven't replied to my email on this yet but I did get a response form a company called Bike Colours who say they can match the paint. just waiting for cost etc. and confirmation on details. I'm guessing it'll be pricey!
I may also look at trying to match to a car paint but not sure how easy this will be - the wheels look like a 'mild' metallic finish so not a straight grey shade.
Being fussy on this bike as the plan is to go as near original as possible as it came with pretty much everything original.
The search goes on!
Cheers,
Andy

Quick update on the search...
RS don't have a match on this colour but are happy to do one if I take in a wheel to match. Luckily I've got a NOS wheel in the shed so aim to pop this over to them and hopefully they can make something work.
Fingers crossed!
Cheers,
Andy

Further update - RS have done the best match they could manage and I've just got to get time to prep and paint a sample wheel to see how it looks.
Will post a photo when done
Cheers again for help,
Andy

Andy if you have an old paint sample (wheel like you said) most car paint suppliers can colour match and provide in spray cans or in liquid in tin form for putting in spraygun.
