Re: Sorn question/help
Except the V5 states , that the registered keeper is not necessarily the owner.

The new ruling and I think the new V5 states that the registered keeper is responsible for the vehicle.
Another practical example of madness, I just changed over the insurance from Karens old car to her new car. The old car is now sat on the drive, MOT and 4 1/2 months tax remaining. The car will now be advertised for sale.
The law now states that we must sorn this vehicle as it is not insured, the 4 1/2 months tax will then be cancelled automatically and we can get 4 months worth of tax refunded, so 1/2 month wasted which costs around £10 as its £240 a year. The new car just purchased was taxed and still shows on dvla site as taxed until september, this was sent in for a refund so 3/4 month wasted or around £16 - so thats £26 paid for ......... errr nothing !
Some "normal" hgv's are £1,850 a year so this could raise the thieving B******S £154 for every month tax that was lost. There are millions of pounds involved here.
This is just another stealth tax as tens of thousands of cars, bikes, trucks etc will be untaxed and taxed in the same month when they change owners.
As for this one, its staying taxed, on the drive until its sold and sod the dvla.
Its called road fund licence - surely this is for vehicles that are ON the bloody road.
How the hell can it be wrong to have a vehicle on private ground even if it is still taxed and not being used. Surely it would be better to be able to sorn or "unsorn" a vehicle for all or any of 3 reasons without affecting the road tax.
(1) tax expired
(2) MOT expired
(3) insurance expired.
The same legal obligation without being robbed of the road tax and in this online world could be done in seconds or even at the post office if needs be.
. . . . . . . Just another fund raiser I reckon.
I assume there must be thousands of vehicles not sorned and parked up LEGALLY off road, I do hope they get buried under the paperwork they must have created.
The problem is the persistant offenders just don't care and will still drive without Tax, insurance or MOT because that's their mentality, if the car is stolen they can drive past the plod all day as the vehicle unless reported and bulletined may show up on the anpr as everything being in order.
Rant 3 over. . . . . . . I'll lighten up by Christmas I promise

Re: Sorn question/help
The rest of the world insure the vehicle. Drivers and ages , type of personal cover are added to increase the amount you can claim from the company.
This way every vehicle has 3rd party liability and the insurance is passed on when the vehicle is sold.
No insurance . No sale except for spares repair. No kitty for uninsured drivers paid for by those who pay insurance anyway .
Roadtax is incorporated in fuel prices so you pay as you go.
Oh yes Britain is the european cash cow. Axa trade as stated above in France and Europe
and differently in the UK!
Fuel is on par in Europe ( pence per litre) with us. BUT road tax is included. Given bikes in Uk generally are on the road for 6 months (£38 tax say) and cover 3000 miles
would it be cheaper to do it so here ?

Re: Sorn question/help
I'd begrudge paying road tax on my mower (non sit on), hedge cutters, strimmers etc etc I can get thru' quite a lot of fuel during the course of a season
