Yay for the 400!

Post by Uncle Bob » Fri May 29, 2015 5:54 pm

First MOT for my 400 I got last year since July 2009 (been off the road for 5 years), and it passed (advisories on slightly lose chain and getting low rear brake pads) - Yay :-) Just some tax now and I can take out for a longer run and give it a proper shake down.

I was thinking that but the temptation... out with family tomorrow and hopefully it will rain Sunday making it easier to resist. once I get a longer spin I can take another look at the carbs. They are nearly there but not quite.

Yes JohnR has already given me the good news about those in another thread. It's nearly got parted out on Ebay once, but I have ridden it now and have to say I liked it. That can always change! I see you have an Impulse any hints and tips (probably give up now :-) )

Wrong impulse, completely different carbs. Though redex is very helpful even if it is just 2stroke oil really.

I heard that redex is just red coloured paraffin, i've been putting it in my 250 kat since i bought it just over a year ago and its never failed to start on the button, the carbs don't gum up, it seems to cut down the effect of ethanol in the fuel system and it reduces moisture in the fuel tank, so i'm happy to keep putting red paraffin in my bike :)

i solved the problem of the carbs on my 400 by selling the bike tom some other muppet (i did tell him its faults, and he still bought it.) not ever again will i have a 400, not if it came with a gold clock. lovely looking sweet handling thing with an awful awful carburation problem.

John sounds scarred for life! I think tharapy might be in order...

Ok on the different version of Impulse.

Redex - haven't used that for years - I was using Briggs and Stratton Fuel Stabilizer but might try Redex again as i think it's cheaper and you use less of it per litre.

I did have a look at the carbs last night. The Pilot screw should be 1 3/4 i finally found in the Japanese manual (I think I had 1.5 from the other thread) and I did hunt around for the Float height, which I think is level with the float bowl gasket (+- 1.5mm). I found they have put a handy point under the drian screw to attach a clear pipe to for this purpose (well I'm using it that way) and I can take the float bowls off with out removing the carbs as I used allen key screws on reassembly. Didn't finish so a job for later this week - new C&S on the 1100 first.
