Ok...had the front end off the 1100 to do a weeping seal and change fork oil.
While in bits I thought I may as well balance the carbs to smoothe out a little lumpiness at tickover.
Been running with pilot screws at 2 and a 1/2 turns out for the last year so experimented at 2 and 2 and 1/4 turns which only resulted in white smoke from both silencers so we're back at 2 and 1/2.
It's emptying the lawnmower petrol tank at an alarming rate of knots and am getting fuel flooding out the overflow as well as becoming reluctant to start.
Any adjustments on the screw/locknuts have been minimal and purely experimental and have been returned to what they were at.
Anyone any ideas?

To be honest I 'd plump for a bit of debris from the surrogate tank sticky a float.

Sorted. Ditched lawnmower tank and put main tank back on. Tight and fiddly with burnt fingers but more accurate.
