550 carbs again...

Post by Nicky Dodds » Mon Nov 09, 2015 11:34 pm

Right...after fitting a new stator and reg/rec i thought i'd give the 550 a whirl.
It now refuses to run as smooth as it did with a fucked charging system albeit with a fully charged battery. Even when slightly warm it will not idle without tickling the tickover screw and when blipping the throttle it will eventually rev up but doesn't fall back cleanly, sometimes causing it to race and the only way to stop it is back the tickover screw off again.
I then noticed fuel dripping from the carbs presumably from the overflow (no pipes on them)
Carbs have been flushed out twice with wynn's carb cleaner and re-balanced twice.
Am i looking at something sticking or is it float height or something ?

What your rubbers like Nicky ?!!!!!

also....................

these get missed of all the time. they get brittle and flatten over time and you get a air leak.

Petrol pissing out could be float height or stuck float needles. Worth taking all the jets and needles out anyway to have a look/clean.

Fuel dripping, means float sticking or too high.
The pipes are actually not just overflow but pressure equalise pipes.

However the inlet rubbers are very likely suspect.

I thought my inlets were ok tbh but may be wrong.
Another wrestle with the carbs then :o

check out those big o rings as well Nicky. Any leak between the carb and engine is unmetered air eh.

Try spraying all over with wd40 first and see if you can pick up the air leak that way. Your petrol leaking is more than likely sticking float needles or floats.

if you didn't take off the inlets then my money says the rings behind them will be perished and flat and leaking...

I remember my 550 ones were as brittle as hell and broken in loads of places. Flat as pancakes as well.

Its the sort of thing that never gets replaced, but can cause a lot of problems.

Inlet rubbers are ok. Changed o-rings as a matter of course and cleaned off a ton of red hermetite. Bench balanced and cleaned the choke mechanism too. Whipping the bowls off later.

I hate this bike!
5 days of carb cleaning, replacing gaskets and o-rings, checking everything looks ok
Put back together and no leaks while ticking over
Took out for a spin and wouldn't rev out....max speed 50mph and the bastard thing ran out of petrol on me!
Mrs Dodds came to the rescue with a gallon and managed 3 miles before it died 200m from home.
Fiddled about and found a poor coil connection and tried to start it this afternoon. Back to the petrol pissing out and when blipping the throttle it 'hangs' a little again before dropping.
Did i mention i hate this bike!

If you really want to be tested buy an old italian bike, and looking at your footnote, if your 5 year old grandaughter thinks its hers tell her that it is! :)
