When we went to Denmark the S2 along with others used engine oil, was it due to the heat?
Today I carried out a non scientific test.
I left here in Manchester at 0630 to go to my son's sons 6th birthday party ......in Kent
It p***ed it down all the way 257 miles Arrived 1200 hrs , oil used nil....left the at 1700hrs got home 2200hrs total for the day 520 miles though it stopped raining about Northampton on the way back , it was 7.30pm so getting errrr cooler....total oil used nil.. :
Conclusion, yep heat : and air cooled engines.

Question when I figured out the left hand heated grip had packed up at Corley services on the way back, why did it take until Stafford to suss out that I could just put my wet hand on the rocker cover , as it is just motorway and mostly 50mph no drama

perhaps its not the heat but the speed that makes it use oil. if, as you say you were mostly stuck at 50mph on the motorway, then you were'nt approaching the speeds we were cruising at in germany/denmark holland etc where we seldom dropped below 80mph. higher speeds, so higher oil flow round the motors, and yes, potentially higher temps, although higher speed also means better cooling.
oh, and fwiw, the bmw hasnt burned a drop of oil in the last 10 thousand miles.

Well mine used a litre over the EK8 weekend. But does not use much normally

Just for reference the 400 didn't use any (that I noticed) on the Denmark run. (I'm sure there is an Emoji for Smug but not sure what it is!)

My old bus is the same, sustained high speeds and the oil burns. Used just about a litre for Denmark, none used on the way to Harwich which was a steady 60-70mph with a few stops as well. Oil then checked again on site and the bike needed half a litre, and I had the same in reverse on the way home.
Again not scientific but I’ve done plenty of mileage since Denmark and the oil level hasn’t moved

Yep high cruise speeds & added heat of Europe, EK1 my oil light started coming on while ticking over at traffic lights, thin oil, oil cooler added & this helps. Other EK's I also used lots of oil, I carry a litre with me & some years had to purchase more on route.

This year not travelling in the pack (or is that a pride of Kats) I had spare oil when I got home from the 1600m, fuel economy was far better as well, 10 - 11L for 130 ish miles. Except when I found the Sport Tesla playing traffic jumping round Germany, don't think he expected an old loaded up bike to stick with him, next fuel stop was 167DK. I added the exhaust rap to help keep the heat from the down pipes from warming the motor, seams to have helped a bit.

Conclusion, on long runs drive at a steady pace & within the advised speed limits !!
