So has anyone any suggestions that doesn't involve a full strip down, a skip or the local canal. I'm really starting to regret buying this bloody thing now.

More problems?
As I'm on holiday this week and the weather has been so nice I've been out on the bike enjoying myself. However, yet another problem has now reared it's ugly head
my gearchange has started playing up! the box is it's normal hot knife through butter on upchanges but changing down is problematic. It seems ok from fifth to fourth and fourth to third but changing down into second the box sometimes gets stuck in third and only stamping on the pedal seems to shift it. If I'm coming to a stop and it gets stuck in third it takes a fair bit of wiggling to find neutral. The clutch isn't dragging, the oil level is ok (maybe a bit on the high side) and the chain is adjusted correctly.
So has anyone any suggestions that doesn't involve a full strip down, a skip or the local canal. I'm really starting to regret buying this bloody thing now.

check that thee shaft moves freely where it goes through the sprocket cover by your left foot. also check that the external linkages are in the correct position and not too tight an angle if you get what i mean, cos that would work ok in on direction but be too tight in the other.

Thanks John I'll check but to be honest I've not moved the gear linkage since I renovate the chain for cleaning a couple of months ago and it's been ok till todayjohnr wrote:check that thee shaft moves freely where it goes through the sprocket cover by your left foot. also check that the external linkages are in the correct position and not too tight an angle if you get what i mean, cos that would work ok in on direction but be too tight in the other.

650 front brake
Had a blast on my ASP special Anglo german 650 today. Noticed the brake lever had almost no travel. Felt solid but the brakes worked. Been so used to a certain amount of sponginess that just did not feel right. Should I be worried.

Jmac. No major worries, it will be the master cylinder cruddied up a little , stripping the clean it out will require a new seal kit as when you disturb it ,it won't sit in the same place. If you can live with it do so , just until you are ready to get involved.

Re: More problems?
Right I've had a closer look at the offending item this morning and I can see that if I change up the lever returns to central but when changing down the lever stays down? I removed the sprocket cover with the hope the gear shaft was binding in the cover but unfortunatley it wasnt. where the shaft goes into the crankcase there is a spring clip which holds a washer/shim up against the oil seal, I removed this, cleaned it up & greased it. This didn't make any difference whatsoever? It feels like there might be a problem with the gear quadrant or return spring while jiggling the change shaft but as that is located behind the clutch cover and I've not long done an oil change I'll leave it until I do the top end over the winter. I've found that when I'm riding and I change down if I lift the gear lever a tad the next down change works a treat, not ideal but it will do for now. Old bikes eh, dontcha just love em?
