Valve rocker shafts

After stripping my cylinder head I noticed a strange thing?
The shafts the rocker arms run on (no 12 in the attached pic) have a cross head screw and a washer screwed into one end of the shaft on my engine yet the diagram clearly shows none fitted? Is this one of my bikes previous owners bodges or is there a sound reason?

I take it they are the same on all 4 rocker arms?

I haven't researched this loads but this rocker arm for a GSX1100EFE has that screw in the end:

So maybe yours has EFE rocker arms and this was some mod people did (either to improve something or that was what they had available? It looks like that is a screw to hold the one passing through the shaft in place? Assuming that is the way EFE's are then Suzuki must have put it there to fix some sort of issue.

As Blix had those screws on his rocker shafts as well (other post) I checked the parts diagram for the EFE at Robinsons and on that it doesn't show those screws either. My guess is they come with the shaft hence not a separate item.

It’s a bit of a mystery? the reason I’m concerned is because my cams and cylinder head are toast and I don’t want a repeat when start up time comes

I’ve posted the same question on OSS and had a few replies including this one.

Look at Haynes Manual page 89 - picture 22.3a and there is the crosshead in the end of the rocker shaft and on the following page 22.3c shows a bolt being used to withdraw the shaft. I suspect that there should be screws in either end to maximise oil pressure to the rocker bearings as its piss poor at the best of times - so its not a bodge unless its a Suzuki bodge LOL!

So I’ve looked at the Haynes manual and it does indeed show a screw in the end of the shafts, so my question is should I put a screw in both ends of the shaft or leave it as is?
