switch is simple enough, take the wire off and touch it to earth and the light should come on, its just a brass plunger held down by a spring. you didnt paint the casing did you? if so, did you check that the inside of the switch is bare metal, cos the switch plunger needs to be able to earth out.

When I started mine for the first time I did the "Spin it up with no plugs in" to check for oil pressure.

Good job really as the person I got the engine off had been in, looking for bits to swap to an 1100.

I knew he had been at the clutch so I had sorted that one, but missed the poorly re-fitted circlip to the oil pump drive......

But that's why you do these dry starts on engines.

Do you have the Oil Pressure light on and not going off? Which would imply no oil pressure. Or is light off at all times? Which would suggest a lamp/switch fault.

Another quick and dirty check is to remove the end plug from the oil gallery, and spin up the engine. If the pump is working it will cover your right leg in oil.
