Hello from Nottingham

Post by Mark.mi16 » Sat Oct 03, 2020 10:12 pm

Hi All.

I’ve recently bought a resto-modded 750 Katana. It was featured in Practical Performance Bikes in May 2019 & Mark Hynes who restored it has done a great job in my view. It retains the classic Kat look, but with GSXR1100k wheels, forks and front brakes for more up to date handling & tyre choice. The chassis has been strengthened & it’s running a Muzzy silencer on stainless headers. I bought it from the current owner & rode it back from Bristol to Nottingham.

The Katana was THE super bike from the time when I started my motorcycling experience in late 1981. In 82/ 83, we hung round with a fairly large crowd (me on a 350 LC), one of which was Steve Spray, who had a Katana, obviously. It was sprayed red after a spill. He was completely bonkers & known as Mad Jack back then. When he got banned on the road, he started racing and the rest is history.

My long standing friend has owned an 1100 Kat since 1985, that sat in storage here when he emigrated to the US. About 10 years ago he had it shipped over to LA where it gets regular runs out & shown at Pebble Beach amongst others.

My Kat May only be a 750, but I love it and owning one has been a long held dream. I also own a Honda NS250R undergoing refurbishment and a Yamaha MT03 660 single as a daily rider/ commuter - back when we did commuting that is!

I look forward to learning from your wealth of experience as I maintain and improve my Kat.

Stay safe all, Mark.

Hello and Welcome. Let's have some photos of the bike please.

It was braced by Mark who restored it prior to powder coating. I would inagine it adds a kilo or two maximum, but I appreciate his attention to detail. I would have done the same. Early 80s frames aren’t exactly renowned for their stiffness, so it certainly won’t do any harm.

Welcome, your pal that migrated his Kat to LA, does he show it around LA also? You mentioned Pebble Beach, but thats 6 hours from LA.

If so I would love to see it. I'm about 3 hours south of LA. And no I'm not on fire yet.

I'm in Orange County. Is his name Chris Redpath? Thats who I bought mine from, I think he said he was a motoGP mechanic from somewhere with a thick accent. He had like 3 Katana's in his shop all top notch. He also had an XN85 and lots of other note worth stuff.

If it's funny because he is like 2 minutes from me.

He is in Orange County.
