The 650 in France I drain the carbs and leave the drain plugs unscrewed....it can be over a year before I get to it again but every time I just prime the carbs and it fires straight up, I only use super 98 octane in it.
With the bikes here again it could be nearly a year before I get to each one ...the S2 wasn't used last year and has a fuelcat in the tank ...started it last week...straight away , on to an even tick over in minutes ....so if the fuelcat didn't do owt it wouldn't have gone to an even tick over without a lot of revving etc ...yes it does work, all it does is put the lead back that the EU took out giving a cooler even spark .
As for esso non ethanol , it depends which refinery in which area.

I use Esso super in both my bikes and have no problems. The VJMC have done tests and found no ethanol in their super.

That was an interesting read (thanks for the link) - I have seen the Spitfire brand (Broquet) at shows and had wondered about them. After doing some searching I think you have to say that really there is no evidence of them working (from testing or the science behind them), and the general consensus seems to be that (there is discussion on them on Classic Car forums as well, as you'd expect). It doesn't put the Lead back, as they are only 5% lead (according to the link Paul gave) and they don't erode which you would expect if it was leaching Lead out of them.

Even the RAF story has no basis to it to be found. The man they say invented it was Henry Broquet but Google that name and you will not find a single webpage in the billions out there about him other than on pages of places trying to sell the fuel cat (or forums discussing the places trying to sell them), which is fairly telling - if the company has made this story up how can they be trusted with the other claims?
As an aside to that I did find this story on the Royal Society of Chemistry website (which I thought was interesting in it's own right) https://www.rsc.org/AboutUs/News/PressR ... reFuel.asp which was about a French engineer working in the States who possibly (at time of writing it was unconfirmed) invented a process to get fuel to 100 octane rating, helping the Spitfire etc. get to faster speeds over the German opposition. Reading it, this is at the "cracking" stage, so in manufacture, not by simply adding (mainly) Tin to the petrol tank.

I do use Sta-bil in my bikes which is an American brand so harder to find here (I get from https://www.motorgeek.co.uk/cgi-bin/eco ... b_pid=1093). I would say it works well (the 400 is the best test as known for carb joys and it has been fine since using). Amazon.com (the US one) reviews are pretty good for it, main criticism being the opened shelf life is 2 years so if you don't use much then buy a smaller bottle, but I tend to use it all year round, not just for winter. I don't bother draining the carbs with this in.

I will use Esso 97 if I can but nearest station is some way from me so that doesn't happen to often.
