Fuel Tap
Fuel Tap
Hi,
I posted this on the facebook group and Fossie suggested I put it here as well.
I need a replacement fuel tap / Petcock for my GSX400SS, the one on there is leaking and can't be repaired.
I have tried a generic 44mm tap from ebay which fits, but it fouls on the top of the engine, because the fuel outlet is on the wrong side.
According to the parts list, the original part is 44300-45d01 which i've found available to order but it's on a six week lead time, so I wondered if anyone had sourced another tap which does fit?
Cheers,

Re: Fuel Tap
Welcome to the forum ...someone will be along I'd of thought ...but in the mean time , really all you need is a fuel tap with the fuel outlet on the correct side .
As explained the part number last bit is the first bike it was fitted to .....but that dosen't actually mean nothing before . Parts are made to suit the ease of manufacture , so if there isn't one in the parts bin they make one and enter it the system .
So a search through pictures should come up with something suitable.
The vacuum takeoff is less important because a longer pipe can used as long as it dosen't kink over .

Re: Fuel Tap
Sorry for the double post. I couldn't work out how to delete the duplicate.
Thanks for the link Fossie. I don't see anything ideal, but there is a 44m with a rear outlet. I'll have a look at clearance behine the tap tomorrow.

Re: Fuel Tap
I'm tempted to do away with the 400 vacuum fuel tap but haven't got round to it yet...
It has failed once and fuel ended up in No 1 cylinder and I got away with no damage on a hydraulic lock luckily. Blame it on the crappy Ethanol in the petrol. I also find the 400 carbs must evaporate the fuel off so before starting after leaving for a while I always leave on Prime for a bit before starting.
I was hoping there would be something like the Pingel ones to fit (original are expensive though...) but haven't investigated enough yet. I was thinking of something more expensive as I haven't had a lot of luck with the cheap ones and also that sounds like the source of your issues as well.

Re: Fuel Tap
Is yours leaking from the diaphragm or the lever gasket?
I have a used tap here, when I have a minute, I will get it apart and see if I have a lever gasket that might fit.
If it's a diaphragm problem, you might be screwed as I have never found a supplier for this part.

Re: Fuel Tap
If you suffer hydraulic lock on 1 cyl then granted the fuel has passed through it , but obviously that float is also suspect ..Uncle Bob wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 12:33 pmI'm tempted to do away with the 400 vacuum fuel tap but haven't got round to it yet...

NRP do them https://nrp-carbs.co.uk/shop/index.php? ... 98&page=23
Which is what I used in mine. I have one for the 250 as well when I get round to doing it.

Re: Fuel Tap
That's great, it has everything you need. Shame I didn't know that before I bought a new tap! I might get the kit anyway to refurb my old tap then put it on ebay and see if I can make a few quid, rather than the old one just sitting on my shelf.

Re: Fuel Tap
I thought he could repair his with the kit, but if he can't, he can buy this one off me. I can't actually remember why I took this one off the bike now. It could be functioning, but replaced as a precaution. I really should put a note in with this old crap that I keep as I definitely can't rely on my memory.
