sorn question

Post by Nigelkat » Sat Jul 09, 2011 8:24 pm

Just got a 550 frame with a V5 for a new project. The bike was last taxed in 1997 so was registered as unlicienced. this was before the sorn thing started I think?
So now that I am the registered keeper do I have to put it on a sorn or will the current listing continue until I finally get it back on the road?
Any one know what the procedure is for this?
Cheers
Nigel

I would guess with the new rules that have just been brought in that it would be wise to sorn it. You can never be to certain as the buggers will try anything they can to take more money from the public !!!

If off the road before 1st Jan 1998 then it doesn't need to be sorned....

Found this out a while back as was checking out one of my Kats that i thought was ok, but turns out mine was a year later (off road since 99) so needs to be sorned, must get on and do it, then find out if and how much they fine me :(

Simple answer is YES!

As has been said if the vehicle was not taxed prior to the SORN regs coming into force, it did not need to be declared SORN.

If it was taxed but not renewed after the start of the regs then it needs a SORN.

Now this is the bit that gets you. If you buy an un-SORN'ed OR a SORN'ed vehicle, you are obliged to either declare it SORN from the date of transfer of keeper, or apply for a Tax disc.

The SORN declaration does not last the 12 months as if you had bought a taxed vehicle, it lapses on change of owner.

I got the warning e-mail from DVLA when I did Skruffy Kat and the other frame I have a while ago. But there was no follow up. I suspect that there is such a back log of vehicles to be SORN'ed the prosecution of the regs is likely to be used only if the vehicle is caught on the road.

EDIT: To make the SORN all the info is on the following link. There is refernce number on the V5C that can be used on-line.
